Lots of gardeners have this plant, few have even heard about the power of its roots.

Indian coleus produces thick, tuberous roots and creeping underground rhizomes that act as storage organs for water and natural compounds. These fleshy golden roots allow the plant to push through summer, even dry Perth summer with ease.

While the leaves adds a vibrant green touch to the garden, it is the root system underneath that holds the real value for traditional food preparation and herbal use. Although the leaves too hold medicinal value too.

In culinary traditions across parts of India, these root tubers are dug up, cleaned, and sliced to make fresh chutneys or tangy spicy pickles. When eaten fresh, the raw tubers have a crisp texture and a distinctively pungent, slightly bitter flavour that sits somewhere between a radish and ginger. They are mostly enjoyed in small amounts as a sharp condiment to kick off a meal, though moderation is best since eating large amounts raw can upset a sensitive stomach.

Beyond the kitchen, the roots are famous for containing forskolin, a natural compound long valued in Ayurvedic medicine. Historically used to soothe digestive troubles and clear up congestion, modern interest focuses heavily on how forskolin interacts with cellular energy.

It helps stimulate fat breakdown, supports healthy blood circulation by relaxing blood vessels, and helps open up airways. Just keep in mind that because it affects blood pressure and heart function, anyone taking medication or managing health conditions should check in with a doctor before using concentrated root extracts.
