The original ESALQ Jaboticaba is from Brazil, and produces large red fruits with relatively small seeds. The name "ESALQ" is derived from "Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz," a renowned agricultural school in Brazil. This linkage signifies the variety's importance in research and botanical studies in Brazil. One of the first things observers note about the fruit is its larger than average size. ESALQ fruits are distinct due to their thick skin, which protects the juicy pulp inside. The fruit also has smaller than normal seeds, which is highly regarded for Jaboticabas. The ESALQ Jaboticaba is one of the sweetest and has a slightly tangy flavour profile characteristic of Jaboticabas, its thick skin can influence the overall mouthfeel. Some may choose to consume the skin, given its nutrient content, while most discard it. Given its size, around 4 cm, the ESALQ Jaboticaba is excellent for jams, jellies, and wines. The thick skin creates deeper colours in homemade wines too. Seed grown ESALQ are not exactly true to type, yet still create magnificent fruiting specimens, unusual yet fairly easy to grow and quick to fruit in usually 4 - 5 years. The story of ESALQ White is fascinating. It sounds completely backward, but the fruit of the "ESALQ White" is actually dark reddish-purple The reason for this is that ESALQ Red is identical to ESALQ White. The word "White" (or \*Branca\* in Portuguese) in its historical name only exists because of a human labeling mistake at the university campus decades ago. The tree was accidentally tagged as a green/white variety when it was actually a rare wild \*Plinia phitrantha\* that ripens to a deep red or maroon-purple color. Because it's the exact same lineage, some sellers list it under its true color as "ESALQ Red" while others keep the old historical tag name and call it "ESALQ White". Either way, it's the same large, sweet, red-to-purple fruiting tree. When collectors, nurseries, and research papers refer to the "ESALQ Red" or the "White ESALQ" in the context of João Rodrigues de Mattos' botanical work at the university, they are describing the same unique selection.
