Plinia grandifolia, or Jabuticaba Graúda, is a rare Brazilian rainforest understory tree with large leathery leaves and big fruit. It loves shade, well-draining soil with a 5.5 to 6.5 pH, and reaches 8 metres, though you can prune it to 2 or 4 metres. This slow grower has a thick canopy and bumpy trunk yielding sweet, tangy, 5cm dark purple berries in autumn and spring. Its hard, uneven timber is prone to pests, so locals skip construction and use it for sturdy tool handles, slow-burning charcoal, and cooking fires.
