Zoufa - The Mountain Tea

Share

Micromeria myrtifolia. Sometimes called Myrtle-leaved savory.

Other common names for this plant include myrtle-leaved savory, wild mint, or Levant rock-mint.

A small, woody shrub from the mint family that looks delicate but is tougher than it seems. Native to the rocky mountain soils of the Eastern Mediterranean—think Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey, and Greece—it thrives on the kind of hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters that Perth is know well for.

A compact, velvety plant covered in clouds of tiny pink flowers, releasing a wonderful fragrance with every brush of your hand. In its homeland, locals have brewed its leaves into a traditional herbal tea for generations, using it to soothe colds and settle digestion.

For Perth gardeners looking to save water, love low-maintenance plants, and grow something with a story, zoufa is an absolute gem.

It's perfectly adapted to our Mediterranean climate, flourishing in full sun and poor, rocky soils where other plants would struggle. It asks for very little—just sharp drainage and a sunny spot—and rewards you with beauty, fragrance, and a cup of tea.

Is it Rare or Common in Australia?
Zoufa is quite rare in Australian gardens. While the broader Micromeria genus is known worldwide, there's very little evidence that Micromeria myrtifolia has been widely introduced or cultivated here. Not in the mainstream anyways, I've only just come across this beauty for the first time in 15 years. An online search of Australian nurseries and seed banks turns up no records of this specific species being commercially available.

You can find a close relative, Mountain Mint (Micromeria thymifolia), sold as seeds in Australia. It's a similar Mediterranean herb used for tea and ground cover.

However, it is a different species.
Unexplored potential, given that Perth's climate is a near-perfect match for its native habitat, Micromeria myrtifolia is a plant with enormous, untapped potential for local gardeners. Yet not classified as a weed too!

So, if you manage to get your hands on some Micromeria myrtifolia, like I did, you'll be growing a true collector's item. You'll be one of the first to champion this incredible, water-wise plant in your community.

In Lebanese and Turkish folk medicine, the greens are used to brew a traditional herbal tea. It's enjoyed as a relaxing beverage and is traditionally used to treat colds, flu, respiratory issues, and digestive discomfort.

Modern research supports its traditional uses, revealing several notable properties. Studies show extracts possess significant antidepressant activity, likely due to compounds like rosmarinic acid, myricetin, apigenin, and naringenin.

Medicinally potent. The essential oil and extracts pack a massive antioxidant punch to keep your cells healthy. They are awesome at fighting off bad bugs, easily taking down nasty bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and keeping other germs in check. They also help manage your blood sugar levels by slowing down the enzymes that break down carbs. On top of all that, they smash fungal infections and stop the body reactions that cause painful inflammation.

Micromeria myrtifolia is native to the Eastern Mediterranean region, extending to Iran. Its native range includes Lebanon-Syria, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Palestine, Israel, Iraq, and Iran.

Growing Conditions in Perth
Perth's Mediterranean climate (hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters) closely matches its native habitat.

Sun & Soil: Needs full sun and very well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil. Rocky or sandy soils are ideal; avoid heavy, water-retentive clay.

Water: Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Water infrequently but deeply during extended dry periods.

Hardiness: Frost-hardy to a degree, but protect from excessive winter moisture to prevent root rot.

Pests & Diseases: Generally pest-free with good drainage.

While large-scale commercial data is limited, its potential is significant:

Essential Oil: The oil, rich in compounds like b-caryophyllene (40.8%) and a-copaene (17.9%), has value for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Herbal Tea & Supplements: Dried leaves and stems can be sold as tea or in capsules.

Micromeria myrtifolia is an excellent choice for beginner and low-maintenance gardeners in Perth, provided you can give it full sun and sharp drainage.

Propagation is easy from spring-sown seeds or semi-hardwood cuttings taken in spring.

Maintenance requires minimal care, with occasional pruning to maintain shape.

Worth as a community plant. Zoufa makes a brilliant companion plant for your fruit trees and subtropical garden beds. Because it belongs to the mint family, its leaves are packed with strong essential oils that act as a natural bodyguard for nearby plants. The intense aromatic scent confuses and deters common garden pests, helping to keep your fruit trees clean without using chemical sprays.

The small, pink flowers are attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
